HomeJoyThe Wild

Have you ever looked at an old photo from your childhood and wondered what happened to all that innocent happiness? That was my reaction to finding this image of my three-year-old self. But if the following poem is correct, her joyful presence may not be so far away after all.

The Wild

I knew her once—
The Wild.

The one who lived free
in exuberant joy,
in love with being here.

Fearless, sunny—
a light that shone
on all she met
and welcomed
what might come.

What must fall away
to get her back?

Only blinders, perhaps,
or doubt—
more likely lack of trust
in her reality.

She was never really far away,
needing only
a gentle invitation
to reappear.
